PSYC 4717 - Community Psychology 3 s.h.

Community Psychology seeks to understand the quality of life of individuals, communities, and society. The course will focus on a variety of health-related and social problems that are often the focus of a Community Psychologist’s work; these efforts include the use of collaborative research, needs assessments, gaps analysis/asset mapping, community advisement, program development, creation of evidence-based interventions, communitywide health message dissemination via a variety of media methods, and program evaluation. Students will participate in a program development project whereby they choose a target population with a unique risk/need. The project will be developed in a manner that is respectful and culturally appropriate to the target population of interest. The course will provide academic preparation for students seeking careers in human services, community mental health, family & youth programs, prevention, program evaluation, multicultural program development, and other services often provided by community-based health and social service organizations. The course may help prepare students for graduate work in various academic and applied research fields, including Psychology, Sociology, Counseling, Public Health, Social Work or Cultural Studies, and Policy Studies. A-E Only. Offered Fall and Spring.
