HISA 3708 - Black Women and Social Change 3 s.h. The course focuses on the ways that African American women shaped the U.S. economic, social, and political landscape from slavery to modern times. The class examines figures such as Maria Stewart, Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth, Ida B. Wells-Barnett, Billie Holiday, Mary Church Terrell, Zora Neale Hurston, Michelle Obama, and others to ascertain how African American women challenged intersectional societal barriers to create pathways of liberation. A-E Only. Offered every two years. LA IL Prerequisite(s): SoS or 3 s.h. lower division HIST course.
