HISW 3200 - Latin American Women’s History 3 s.h.

This course surveys the history of women in Latin America from the Conquest to the present. We will examine historical patterns, series of concepts and institutions, and social and political factors that have affected women particularly in Central American countries, Mexico, and the Caribbean, as well as women in some South American countries for the sake of comparison. Equally important, we will focus on ways women have reacted to and helped shape these experiences. The aim of the course is to examine Latin American history through the methodologies employed in mainstream women’s history. It will compare women’s roles, power, and sexual violence during the colonial period; look at women’s work and their connection to the Catholic Church, and explore women, work and politics in Mexico. The course engages extensively with the study of race and class, along with gender, as major categories of analysis. Classes will consist of lectures, films, student presentations, and group discussions of required readings. A-E Only. Offered once a year.
