HISA 4104 - Sailors, Whalers, and Pirates 3 s.h.

This course studies the lives of sailors and pirates in the Age of Exploration and the Age of Sail (1450-1850). Because so many sailors came from the lower social strata, the focus will be on poverty and class relations. Other topics include early modern maps and maritime technology, the North Atlantic fisheries, merchants and transnational merchant networks, privateering, smuggling, naval warfare, women at sea, the scramble for the Pacific Ocean in the nineteenth century, and the advent of steam.
