HIST 4600 - Historiographic Seminar 3 s.h.


This seminar examines the processes by which history is written and created. Students will analyze the evolution of the historical profession, evaluating the key methods and theories used in major historical subfields. Students will learn the history of historical thought and compare schools of historiography and key scholarly historical works to one another. It is intended to introduce students to many of the most important methodologies and philosophies that have developed in the field of history as well as a selection of some of the most influential new fields that have developed since the mid-20th century (e.g. cultural history, gender history, environmental history, etc.). Upon completion of this seminar, students should be able to understand and use basic historiographical and methodological references with proficiency and will use this understanding to write an historiographical essay of approximately 20 pages in length. The course is taught in rotation by multiple professors within the department and the historical theme of the course will change in accordance with the specialty of each professor. Students must earn a C or better in this class in order to move on to the Senior Seminar. A-E Only. Offered Fall and Spring.
