EDUC 3035 - Reading and Literacy I 3 s.h. This course will focus on literacy and language acquisition and development, literacy theories, developmentally appropriate practices involving literacy assessment and instruction with an emphasis on the relationship between reading and writing. Indirect and direct models of the teaching of reading and writing will be examined, focusing on emergent and developing literacy skills, strategies, and academic language. A balanced literacy model, with flexible use of word recognition skills and phonics, will be emphasized and practiced. Children’s literature and technology will be examined as a way to address issues of diversity and differentiation. Topics for study include the creation of a literate environment and inclusion of family and community partnerships. Content in this course is informed by the policies of the US Department of Education, the Race to the Top initiative, and the New York State Education Department. A field component is included. A-E Only. Offered Fall and Spring. Prerequisite(s): JrS, education major, completion of EDUC 1060 , EDUC 3001 , EPSY 2075 and EPSY 2040 .
