HISA 4458 - Sports, Politics, and Social Justice 3 s.h.


This course examines the history of sports, sporting events, and athletes addressing and challenging race, gender, and/or class issues in the United States in the 20th and 21st centuries. The course also examines the ways sports operated as an extension of the broader social struggles, and the ways that sports have shaped particular visions of rights, freedom, and democracy. Topics covered in this course include Jack Johnson, 1936 Berlin Olympics, Integration of Major League Baseball, Arthur Ashe anti-apartheid crusade, 1968 Mexico City Olympics Black Power salute, Muhammad Ali’s draft rejection, Venus Williams’ fight for equal pay, Colin Kaepernick’s protesting police brutality, and more.
