LITR 355 - Postmodernism 3 s.h.


This class will be a study of postmodernism, a major intellectual movement of the second half of the twentieth century that challenged modern ideas about literature and culture. In addition to reading novels and short stories, we will look at developments in film, music, art, and architecture, and discuss questions this movement raised about knowledge, representation, narrative, originality, media, and society. we will study fiction by writers such as Jorge Luis Borges, John Barth, Italo Calvino, Thomas Pynchon, Angela Carter, Milan Kundera, Paul Auster, and Jeanette Winterson; essays by theorists such as Francois Lyotard, Jean Baudrillard, and Linda Hutcheon; music by composers such as Philip Glass and Julia Wolfe; and films by directors such as David Lynch, Jean-Luc Godard, Peter Greenaway, Jane Campion, and Pedro Almodovar.
