Admission Requirements

All students applying for admission to this program are required to have:  

  1. A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution with a GPA of at least 3.0.  
  2. An initial certification in any content area other than library media or technology specialist. 
  3. Submitted all undergraduate or graduate transcripts. 
  4. A one-page statement of your teaching philosophy as an instructor of English Language Learners (ELL) that describes how you might differentiate teaching and learning for this student population.
  5. 12 study hours in a language other than English or demonstrate Intermediate proficiency through the Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) by the American Council on Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) standards. 
  6. Employment in a school district by the fall of their admission into the program and submit a statement of support signed by the school district where the student is employed.

Program Requirements:


Total: 15 s.h.


Programmatic Goals include Applied Learning Project(s) informed by scholarly research and classroom observation. Within course frameworks, candidates will explore diverse linguistic systems that English Language Learners (ELL), Emergent Bilingual (EB), English as a New Language (ENL), English as a Second Language (ESL) and Native Language (NL) students bring to the classroom, and use this knowledge to address potential challenges experienced by these students as they are immersed in English in school settings. Through project presentation, lesson planning and implementation, and engaging in reflective practice, candidates will explore opportunities to share this work within their school districts.

Minimum GPA of 3.0.

Students must complete all program requirements within six years.
