Program purposes and outcomes: Graduate students who successfully complete this full-time three-semester online program will earn a M.S. in Nutrition and Dietetics and be eligible to take the Commission on Dietetic Registration’s (CDR) Registration Examination for Dietitians. The M.S.-Nutrition and Dietetics Program (M.S.-N+D Program) is a non-thesis Master’s program (36 credits) which includes 1180 hours of supervised experiential learning and a culminating community health intervention project (CHIP). The program is designed to provide students with the expected clinical care, food service management, and other skills and competencies that the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) of The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics has established for entry-level practitioners under ACEND’s Standards for graduate programs hereafter referred to as the ACEND Standards. Students will gain experience in providing nutrition care and education for individual clients and communities to prevent or treat conditions such as heart disease, cancer and obesity.
Students enrolled in SUNY Oneonta’s undergraduate didactic program in dietetics (DPD) or SUNY Plattsburgh’s DPD have the option of participating in an early action application option. Students who complete SUNY Farmingdale’s or SUNY Empire’s BS nutrition program that complete required pre-requisite courses also have the option of participating in the early action option. Those students wishing to be considered in the early action application option apply in the fall. These students are notified of their acceptance in January. Students who are not eligible to participate in the early action application option must apply by February 15th. Specific information regarding the application process and materials can be found on the M.S.-Nutrition and Dietetics Program website. Graduate students begin their program in the summer with the start of the first summer session (typically early June). Students are required to attend a virtual orientation just prior to the start of the first summer session. The program is three semesters in length (equivalent to 12 months) and finishes the following spring semester (Mid-May).
The online M.S.–N+D Program permits students to remain in their own communities while completing a graduate program that integrates supervised experiential learning with graduate coursework. Students who apply must provide evidence that they have daily access to a computer, the Internet, and have identified Registered Dietitian/Registered Dietitian Nutritionist preceptors and health-care facilities willing to provide a learning environment. All required courses will be accessed online through Brightspace, an online learning environment and a course delivery system supported through the Academic Information Technology Services Department.
The M.S.–Nutrition and Dietetics Program also offers Registered Dietitians/Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RD/RDN) an affordable high-quality “seamless approach” to becoming a masters-prepared RD/RDN. This “seamless approach” builds on the success of SUNY Oneonta’s ACEND-accredited program and seeks to advance the profession by providing highly qualified masters-prepared Registered Dietitians/Registered Dietitian Nutritionists ready to meet market demands. This M.S.–Nutrition and Dietetics Program for RDs/RDNs awards 12 credit hours of prior learning for completion of an ACEND accredited dietetic internship and successfully passing CDR’s Registration Examination for Dietitians. The 12 credit hours of prior learning awarded would equate to and replace the supervised experiential learning component currently imbedded in the following four graduate courses: NUTR 5250 , NUTR 5650 , FOOD 5800 , and NUTR 5850 . RD/RDN applicants would then be able to complete the online M.S.–Nutrition and Dietetics program in one year or part-time (2-6 years).
Additional information about the online M.S.–N+D Program and application materials are available from the Program website.
