MUSC 3312 - The Sound of Freedom: African American Musical Revolutions 3 s.h.

This course examines a history of African American artists’ usage of music to bring light to various external and internal social issues confronting their community and the broader society as a means for personal and group liberation. The course focuses on lyric examination in conjunction to the historical era to see how the Gospel, Blues, Jazz, Rock ‘n’ Roll, Rhythm and Blues, Country Western, Soul, Folk, Funk, Neo Soul, and Hip-Hop genres addressed issues such as poverty, race relations, gender toxicity, self-love, war, policing, sexuality, domestic conflict, and love. A-E only. Offered every two years.
