HISA 3700 - Colonial and Antebellum America: Slavery to Freedom (1619-1865) 3 s.h.


The course examines slavery’s role in African American history in the British colonies and the United States from the arrival of Africans in the Virginia colony to the General Robert E. Lee’s surrender at Appomattox. Key topics include the transition from indentured servitude to chattel slavery, the role of the Haitian Revolution on the African American freedom struggle, key court cases that defined citizenship, and African American’s role in securing Union victory in the Civil War. A-E only. Offered Spring or Fall.
