POLS 2700 - Gender Politics 3 s.h. Two intertwined central questions inform this course. How is politics gendered? And how do we navigate structurally gendered politics? We begin by asking what we mean by “gender” and “gendered power” and how we use gender as an analytical category while also learning that it intersects with multiple categories (e.g., race, ethnicity, social class, nationality, ability, religion, and sexuality). We also examine the economic, cultural, and political dimensions of contemporary society all across the world. This may include what states do to shape gender relations via participation/representation, rights and policies, and how gender relations influence each of these and affect institutional structures. Topics explored, include but are not limited, to nationalism and citizenship; gender and violence; militarization; gender and global economic restructuring; popular media representations; religious fundamentalisms; and women-led social movements. A-E Only. Offered every third or fourth semester. LA DESJ Cross-listed with WGS 2700 . Prerequisite(s): SoS or 3 s.h. POLS.
