EDUC 5840 - Literacy Development 3 s.h.


This course focuses on the relationship of language, cognition, and culture. Language acquisition theories, linguistic and ethnic diversity, the effects of home environment on language acquisition, and the stages of oral and written language development will be addressed. The course content includes a bit about the history of language, uses of language for a variety of purposes, grammar, dialect, and language usage within American society, but the central focus will be on critical analysis of current research literature on language acquisition and emergent literacy and its implications for best teaching practices, including an understanding of difficulties that may be confronted in acquiring the literacy skills of listening, speaking, and reading. Practicum field component required. A-E Only. Offered Summer, Fall, and Spring.
Prerequisite(s): Degree graduate student status.
