This course will provide an overview of historic preservation practice in the United States, including governmental programs such as the National Register of Historic Places, the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards, and tax credit incentives as well as the work of private non-profits involving advocacy, preservation easements, sustainability, and community revitalization. Students will additionally gain skills in architectural research, building and site documentation, stylistic and use trends, and alternatives to turning every old building into a museum. Student work will include projects in the local community and will include off-campus trips. A-E Only. Offered every Spring semester. Sustainability-focused course.
