WLIT 4083 - Odysseys: Ancient and Modern 3 s.h.

This class will study the form of epic over the course of history with a focus on ancient and modern epics. Beginning with Homer’s Odyssey and Virgil’s Aeneid, the course will closely examine the works’ generic conventions and language, themes, and cultural contexts. We will then go on to examine later epics, especially those from the twentieth century, studying the ways in which they respond to and redefine the genre. In addition to Homer and Virgil, we will study works by authors and artists such as Joyce, Pound, Walcott, and Cesaire. A-E Only. Offered every 2-3 years.
