WGS 3406 - Law, Sex, and Medieval Society 3 s.h.

In the course, students will examine the role of law, religion, and society in the constructs of gender and sexuality as well as the formation of marriage and the role of community in each of these areas. The chronological focus is primarily the Middle Ages, though the Ancient and Classical theories that shaped the medieval ideology will be examined. We will use literature, law codes, philosophy, theology, medical texts, and art to examine marriage, divorce, sexuality, gender, health care, and life-cycle. Students will also learn about issues that arose out of these themes such as family planning, divorce, and domestic violence in the middle ages as well as the historical impact of these ideas and controversies.
