WGS 3725 - LGBTQ U. S. Communities of Color 3 s.h.

This course draws primarily on the history of sexuality, Women’s and Gender, African Americans, Latinx, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, People Indigenous to the Americas, Arab Americans, and Whiteness, in order to explore lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and intersex people’s (lgbtqi) experiences in the United States from the colonial era to the present. In this course, students examine the ways in which discourses on sexuality and gender are fundamentally and inextricably enmeshed with race, class, ability, ethnicity, national identity, immigration status, and religion. Students also explore lgbtqi identity and community formation, racial, class, and ethnic conflict among lgbtqi people, the use of violence to repress homoeroticism and gender nonconformity, and the ways in which lgbtqi communities of color endured despite systematic oppression.
