SMUS 588 - Museums, Landscapes and Society in the Canary Islands 1 s.h.

The course will immerse students in the multicultural environment of the Canary Islands, where they will be able to experience and explore the relationship between science, landscapes, and society through visits to museums, visitor centers of the Teide national park, research centers, a water gallery and historic sites. Students will identify various ways in which the use of the island’s unique and varied landscapes by humans – from small-scale farming to massive touristic exploitation – have shaped the relationship between science, nature, and society throughout the local history and in the present time. They will also be able to observe the role of museums and other visitor-oriented venues in this dialogue between science, nature, and society. This is an experiential course and active participation is required for successful completion. A-E Only. Offered annually.
Prerequisite(s): Permission of the instructor and the director is required for students not enrolled in CGP.
