MATH 303 - Ancient Mathematical Astronomy 3 s.h.

This course is an introduction to the history of the astral sciences from ancient Mesopotamia to Copernicus. Beginning with astronomical records kept by Babylonian priests, we trace the history and development of astronomy with emphasis on the role of both mathematics and observation in the formation of astronomical theories and models. In addition to its theoretical parts, the course has a practical component, in which each student will design and make an ancient astronomical instrument. These instruments will subsequently be used to make simple observations. A-E Only.
