Admission Requirements

All students applying for admission to this program are required to:

  1. Submit a completed application and the non-refundable fee.
  2. A bachelor’s or master’s degree in education issued within the last 10 years.
  3. A minimum 3.0 undergraduate cumulative grade point average; a 2.8 grade point average in the content area of the undergraduate major or master’s degree in the content area.
  4. New York State Teaching Initial Certification.
  5. A minimum of 12 s.h. of college study in a language other than English.

Program Requirements:


Total: 15 s.h.


Programmatic Goals include Applied Learning Project(s) informed by scholarly research and classroom observation. Within course frameworks, candidates will explore diverse linguistic systems that English Language Learners (ELL), Emergent Bilingual (EB), English as a New Language (ENL), English as a Second Language (ESL) and Native Language (NL) students bring to the classroom, and use this knowledge to address potential challenges experienced by these students as they are immersed in English in school settings. Through project presentation, lesson planning and implementation, and engaging in reflective practice, candidates will explore opportunities to share this work within their school districts.

Minimum GPA of 3.0.

Students must complete all program requirements within six years and complete a minimum of 8 s.h. in residence.
