WLIT 317 - Yeats 3 s.h.

This course examines the life and career of the Nobel prize-winning Irish poet William Butler Yeats, whose politics and poetics have figured prominently in recent debates on nationalism and gender within the field of Irish cultural and postcolonial studies. The primary goal of this course is to enable students an opportunity for concentrated study of this central figure’s role in and contribution to Irish cultural history. In the process, students will learn how to interpret poetry and understand poems in relevant contexts. They will also learn how to read and analyze plays, and learn the history of the Irish national theater’s development. Students ideally will finish the course with greater knowledge of the roles writers and cultural productions can play in societies, especially in countries torn by political and social divisions. Offered every 2-3 years.
